Description

Finely 18th Century map of the United States, published in London by J.C. Russell, only 15 years after the official end of the American Revolution.

The map shows the original 13 colonies, plus Maine, Vermont, Kentucky and "Tennassee," with East Florida and West Florida also shown, as is the newly formed US Capital of Washington DC.

The map reflects a massive Spanish Louisiana, pre-dating the secret return of the Louisiana to the French in 1800 and subsequent sale by the French to the Americans, commonly known as the Louisiana Purchase in March 1804.

The map notes a number of Indian Tribes on either side of the Mississippi River, with the course of the Upper Mississippi and Lower Missouri Rivers not yet well understood.

The map reflects a very early appearance of the town of St. Louis, then part of Spanish Louisiana. A number of early American forts, with Fort Adayes shown in Spanish Texas.
