Description

Rare map of Africa, published in Valladolid, Spain. The finely engraved map was included in the Spanish translation of Giovanni Botero's Relaciones Universales del Mundo. The map is based largely on the work of Ortelius, but with entirely Spanish nomenclature. The two-lake origin of the Nile appears in Lake Zair and Lake Zaflan. Mer Rubro is depicted below Cape Horn. The map is embellished with several sailing ships and sea monsters. An extremely rare map, which rarely survives in decent condition. This example has several expertly repaired tears and some remargining, but remains a visually stunning and seriously rare collector's map. Norwich 25. Not in Tooley.
