Description

Fine old color example of this composite map of 3 important Canadian Cities, published at the outset of the Seven Years War (French & Indian War).

At the start of the war, these three cities were the most strategially imporant cities in British Canada.  Halifax, founded in 1749 by the British, was the primary English stronghold in the region.

Louisbourg and Quebec were the primary French strongholds, Louisbourg being the center of the fishing trade and primary location of the French forces defending the entrance to the St. Lawrence Rivers, which would be seized by the British in 1758.

Homann Heirs Biography

Homann Heirs was a German publishing firm that enjoyed a major place in the European map market throughout the eighteenth century. Founded in 1702 by Johann Baptist Homann, the business passed to his son, Christoph, upon Johann’s death in 1724. Christoph died in 1730, aged only 27, and the firm was inherited by subsequent Homann heirs. This altered the name of the company, which was known as Homann Erben, or Homann heirs. The firm continued in business until 1848.
