Description

19th Century Reproduction of the Burgiss Map of Boston

Rare early reproduction of the Burgiss map of Boston, originally engraved by Thomas Johnson in Boston, in 1728.

The credit line notes that the map was engraved (by Johnson) in 1728 and reproduced in 1869.  This example is a commemorative printing for the Bostonian Society in 1885.

In describing this example of the map, the Leventhal Center collection notes that following:

Original version: To His Excellency William Burnet, Esqr., this Plan of Boston in New England is humbly dedicated, [Boston : Sold at the Crown Coffee House, 1728.

The original is unobtainable.  This reproduction is also quite rare on the market, this being the first example we have ever seen.
