Description

Front page of the Paris-soir newspaper, Derniere Edition, for Monday, September 18, 1939, announcing the Russian invasion of Poland.

Following the start of the war and the German invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939, the Soviet Union invaded Poland on September 18, with 40 divisions, many waving white flags at a perplexed Polish population. Already beaten by the Nazis, Poland's army is unable to put up much of a fight, and the following day Russia will easily claim the territory it was promised by Nazi Germany when the two nations signed the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact.

The headline translates:

The Russians are entering Poland.

This morning their troops crossed the frontier.

To safeguard, says Moscow the interests of the USSR and protect White Russia and Ukrainian minorities.
