Description

Rare pictorial map of the world, "Designed By Edward Everett Henry" and published by the Washington Square Book Shop of New York City.

Nice example of the American muralist and illustrator Edward Everett Henry's Art Deco map of the World.  Issued at the height of the Roaring 20s,  the map is created in the general style of Golden Age of Dutch Cartography, with historical vignettes representing the continents (America, Asia, Africa and Europe) in the corners and a grand projection of the sun at the top center, based upon the iconic Pieter Goos World map of 1666, with a similar treatment of the cloud formations and rainbow.

Interestingly the treatment of the Antarctic is limited to the "then known" discoveries, with a similar treatment of the Polar Regions and a note on the discovery of the North Pole by Robert Peary in 1909.

At the bottom center is a futuristic image of a modern city is shown.

Commissioned by the Washington Square Book Shop in Greenwich Village, New York.
