Description

Map of the World on the Eve of James Cook's First Voyage

Gorgeous double hemisphere map of the World, from the Atlas contenant Les Quartes Partis Du Monde, published by the French Royal Academy of Sciences, and engraved by Pierre Bourgoin.

The map includes a massive Bay of the West in the Northwest coast of North America.

The mapping of Australia is very tentative, appearing as Nouvelle Hollande, but with an ill-defined outline.

The supposed existence of a great landmass at the South Pole is indicated by Terres Australes, but no outline of the land mass is shown.

An armillary sphere and other scientific objects are depicted at bottom, while the title is embellished with a decorative cartouche.

Rarity

This is the second time we have offered the map in nearly 20 years.
