Description

Dutch edition of one of the most recognizable maps depicting the Southwest during the late 18th Century.

The map was originally engraved by Kitchin to illustrate Dr. Robertson's History of America, one of the most popular works on America during the period, which was reproduced in a number of editions and languages over a 35 year period, this being a Dutch language edition.

The map reflects the contemporary commercial cartography of 1777, the date of first publication of the map, immediately before the Jesuit expansion into Upper California began to yield cartographic details. The map shows nice detail in Southern Arizona and New Mexico, and reflects contemporary thoughts on Baja California. While Texas is a bit sparce in its interior, the map is consistent with the best commercial material published in Europe.
