Description

Detailed 2-sheet map of Spain and Portugal of the Iberian Peninsula, during the War of Spanish Succession, published in Amerstam, circa 1700.

The map illustrates the mountains, roadways, and waterways the armees used to travel the region, stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean. The map details key towns, villages, churches, and universities.

Main cities throughout Portugal and Spain are color coded in red, including Alcarria, Coria, Placentia, Avila Arula, Alantara, Lisbon, Ebora Evora, Beja, Lepe, Ajamonte, Seville, Cadix ou Cadiz, Xeres dela Frontera, Cordova, Valencia, Xativa, Alicante, Segura, etc.

In the lower right-hand corner, is a beautiful large engraving depicting an episode of the War of the Spanish Succession, the embarkation of troops led by the Archduke Charles, mounted on horseback and surrounded by his nobles and captains; the scene is crowned by three angels on clouds. In the lower left corner there are the scales, framed in a simple cartouche, with the shields of Spain and Portugal and of some of their regions. Shields also distributed in the sea, near the region they represent.

Pierre Mortier Biography

Pierre, or Pieter, Mortier (1661-1711) was a Dutch engraver, son of a French refugee. He was born in Leiden. In 1690 he was granted a privilege to publish French maps in Dutch lands. In 1693 he released the first and accompanying volume of the Neptune Francois. The third followed in 1700. His son, Cornelis (1699-1783), would partner with Johannes Covens I, creating one of the most important map publishing companies of the eighteenth century.
