Fine Pierre Mortier edition of Jaillot's large decorative map of Sicily, showing the eruption of Mount Aetna both on the map and below the decorative title cartouche.

The island is divided into 3 provinces including Valle Di Demona, Valle De Mazara and Valle Di Noto with significant cartographic and geographic information included.

The title cartouche includes two sea gods holding the cartouche aloft, with a coat of arms and other allegorical figures riding atop the image. A fine decorative example with wide clean margins and 2 large cartouches.

Pierre Mortier Biography

Pierre, or Pieter, Mortier (1661-1711) was a Dutch engraver, son of a French refugee. He was born in Leiden. In 1690 he was granted a privilege to publish French maps in Dutch lands. In 1693 he released the first and accompanying volume of the Neptune Francois. The third followed in 1700. His son, Cornelis (1699-1783), would partner with Johannes Covens I, creating one of the most important map publishing companies of the eighteenth century.
