Scarce map of Southeast Asia and China, centered on the Philippines, published in Amsterdam by Mortier.
The map shows a number of early expeditions to and from the Philippines, headed east across the Pacific, along with the route to Siam, likely the one utlized by the French Embassy in 1686.
The configuration of the Philippines is quite primitive.
While the sheet is titled "Third Part," the map was typically issued either as a single sheet, or as 1 sheet of a rare 4 sheet wall map of Asia, published by Mortier prior to 1703.
This first state of the map, published with just the Mortier imprint, is quite scarce on the market.
Pierre, or Pieter, Mortier (1661-1711) was a Dutch engraver, son of a French refugee. He was born in Leiden. In 1690 he was granted a privilege to publish French maps in Dutch lands. In 1693 he released the first and accompanying volume of the Neptune Francois. The third followed in 1700. His son, Cornelis (1699-1783), would partner with Johannes Covens I, creating one of the most important map publishing companies of the eighteenth century.
