Description

Fine early image of the U.S. Mail Ship Adriatic, owned by the New York & Liverpool U.S. Mail Steamship Company, published by Nathaniel Currier.

The print shows the ship flying under the flag of the US at the rear of the vessel, with paddle wheel turning and two smoke stacks billowing dark smoke, while elegantly dressed passengers appear on the two decks.  Several other sailing vessels are shown in the background.

Also inscribed on the print are "Length on Deck 351 Feet. Breadth of Beam 50. Depth of Hold 33 feet 3 inches. 2 Oscillating Engines. 12 Feet Stroke. Diameter of Wheel 40 feet.

The artist, Charles Parsons moved to New York City from England when he was nine years old and later became the head art director for Harper’s. He produced over 30 images for Currier & Ives and specialized in marine subjects.

This is apparently the earlier of two similarly titled views, both by Currier and Parsons, with the second, issued in 1860, showing the ship headed in the opposite direction and flying the Union Jack.
