Description

One of the Earliest Tourist Brochure Guide Maps for Yosemite National Park

Rare early promotional pamphlet for the Yosemite Stage & Turnpike Company (both sides are illustrated in the image).

The pamphlet includes a large map of the Valley, map of California and map of the National Park and surrounding regions in Madera, Tuolumne, Fresno and Mono Counties, plus three large photographic illustrations, one showing a horse team on the new stage road, one showing the Big Trees of the Mariposa Grove and one showing the Grizzly Giant.

The Yosemite Stage & Turnpike Company was formed in the late 1870s to provide stage service from Madera to Yosemite. The company completed the first road through the Mariposa Grove and was very active in promoting travel to the Wawona Hotel, both of which were owned by the Washburn family. Early Yosemite promotional material is highly sought after and we have never before seen a colored promotional guide with large maps.
