The Canal Survey of Napoleon Garella

Scarce map of the Isthmus of Panama, illustrating a proposed Canal from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean, prepared to illustrate the Report of Rear Admiral Charles Henry Davis.

Map shows towns, roads, physical features, and canal details along the proposed canal route across the Isthmus, along with the Panama Railroad.

The map includes an elevation profile of the proposed canal route.

Napoleon Garella was an engineer sent out by the French government to study and report on the prospects for a Canal in central America. Garella recommended a canal from Limon Bay to the bay of Boca del Monte, twelve miles west of Panama, one of the earliest scientific surveys for such a canal.
