Description

Striking map of the Eastern Hemishere, held aloft by an arm and hand reaching from the clouds and holding an inverted axis. Surrounded by charts of Europe, Africa, Asia and America held aloft by representations of each of the 4 contintents as females. The remainder of the title in banner form, held aloft by cherubs. A marvelous allegorical map, which was one of the title pages of Scherer's Atlas. California is shown as an island and a primitive Australia also appears. Scherer's epic work is one of the great late 17th and early 18th Century Cartographic works and is especially prized for its stunning engraving and evocative images. Narrow left margin, but otherwise a flawless example.
