The map examines the primary trading ports in China, Hong Kong and the Philippines, illustrating primary trade routes, railroad lines, proposed railroad lines, telegraphs, cable, canals and navigable rivers.

The map reflects the trade activity in China in the years at the start of the Boxer Rebellion, with the Americans, British, French, Italians and Germans all controlling the railways, as noted on the map.

Engraved for d'Anville's Nouvel Atlas de la Chine, de la Tartarie Chinoise et du Thibet, depicting Qing Dynasty China, this map shows the area from the Selingue Pira (Selenga River) east to the route from Beijing (Peking) to Niptchou (Nerchinsk), encompassing the Left Flank Khalkha Mongol khanates. The site of the Battle of Jao Modo is shown along the Toula (Tuul) river ("Défaite du Caldan par l'Armee de Canghi"), 37 miles east of present-day Ulaanbaatar. The routes of major military campaigns in the area are shown, including that of Alaqush Tegin Quri (here, Tagin), traveling along the Kerlon (Kherlen River) towards the Orgon (Orkhon) River
