Description

Walling's Famed Wall Map of Maine. Here Much Better Condition Than Usually Encountered.

H.F. Walling was a prolific publisher of county and state wall maps and atlases. He focused on New England subjects and published during the last quarter of the 19th century.

Walling's wall map of Maine is among his best known images. It features 29 insets, including images of the world and the United States, and quite a few of Maine city plans.

The city insets include: Portland, Calais, Presque Isle, Houlton, Ellsworth, Bangor, Eastport, Machias, Bath, Farmington, Dover and Foxcroft, Paris Hill, Skowhegan, Waterville, Hallowell, Wiscasset, Gardiner, Augusta, Waldboro, Brunswick, Thomaston, Rockland, Auburn and Lewiston, and Saco and Biddeford.

Another inset shows the mountains of Maine with their height in feet.

There was an edition of 1861 as well.

Condition Description
This example is in much better condition than any other that we have encountered. This is due to the fact that it was issued canvas-backed and folding, rather than varnished and on dowels as was almost always the case. Dissected in 36 sections and backed on canvas. Some wear at intersecting folds. Publisher's hand color. Some folds reinforced on verso.
