Description

Rare early German map of MacKenzie's Route from Montreal to the Arctic Sea. The map covers the region from the Straits of Juan De Fuca and the Supposed Course of the Columbia River (although in reality the Fraser) to the St. Lawrence and Davis Straits, centered on Lake Winnipeg. Excellent detail showing the Hudson's Bay Trading Company's Trading House system and the various Indian Tribes in the region. MacKenzie discovered the river that now bears his name and descended it to the Arctic Ocean in 1789. In 1793, he became the first European to cross the North American continent north of Mexico. He did not, however, actually see the Pacific Ocean. The map offered here matches the title of the map incorporated in one of the German accounts of MacKenzie's travels but is apparently much larger.
