Description

Detailed bird's-eye view of Nagaunee, Michigan, looking northward toward Teal Lake, published by J.J. Stoner and Lithographed by Beck & Pauli in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The image is signed at the bottom by Henry Wellge, one of the earliest views to include his name as the artist.

The map shows the Marquette-Houghton and Ontonagon RR in the foreground along with mines and mills. The town is shown below Lake Teal.

Negaunee is located on the south side of Lake Teal. The town was built after the discovery of the Marquette Iron Range during the early 19th century. The Jackson Mine was established in 1845 to mine the ore for shipment to iron forges. The first such forge to operate in the Lake Superior basin was set up in Negaunee during this period. In 1858, the community was given a post office.

In 1865, Negaunee was incorporated as a village and reincorporated as a city in 1873. As mining operations expanded, many immigrants helped settle the area, bringing with them rich traditions that remain today. Due to extensive underground mining roughly half the city was abandoned in the early 20th century due to risk of cave-in.

Henry Wellge (1850-1917) was a midwestern panoramic map artist and publisher. He worked initially for J. J. Stoner, but in the 1880s, he established his own company. His views of towns in twenty-four states were issued under several imprints.

The view is very rare. We locate no other examples.
