History of Sofia

On March 22, 1878, Sofia became the Capital of Bulgaria, following its liberation from the Ottoman Empire by Russian Forces during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78. Built atop the archaeological site of Serdika, which dated to 6000 BC, Sofia was a town of about 18,000 inhabitants in 17 neighborhoods, within the ring of today's modern City.

The earliest City planning efforts in Sofia began in 1879, shortly after the signing of the San Stefano Treaty.
