Description

Color-printed wood-engraved clipper ship card on porcelain-coated stock, advertising shipping from New York City to San Francisco.

The George Peabody was built in Medford, Mass. in 1853 or '54. She was named after an Anglo-American financier who is widely seen as the "father of modern philanthropy". She weighed 1397 tons. She was condemned at Valparaiso, Chile in 1881.

The card advertises the clipper ship making berth at Pier 14 on the East River in New York City. She had three decks, which "makes her the MOST DESIRABLE VESSEL loading. Being a FAST SAILER, Shippers can depend upon an early delivery of their shipments." The shipping agent is Wm. T. Coleman & Co. of New York and San Francisco.

An attractive piece of Californiana ephemera.
