Description

Rare Variant Edition of Nicolas Sanson's Map of Florida

Important early map of Florida and the Southeast, illustrating a number of early and important cartographic features, published in Frankfurt, by Joannes Zunners, in his Die Gantze Erd-Kugel.

The map is based upon Nicolas Sanson's 1657 map, La Floride, one of the earliest printed maps to focus on the Florida area.

The projection of the Southeast is improved over Sanson's large folio map of the prior year. The Florida nomenclature is corrected from Sanson's North America. Most of the rest of the map is Chaves/Ortelius nomenclature. The Southwest is still largely unknown.

This is the very rare Frankfurt edition of the map . This edition can be distinguished from other editions by the orientation of the word "Septentrion" at the top of the map. In the 1679 Zunners edition, the word is bifurcated before the last 4 letters.

This edition of the map also includes Latin nomenclature, rather than French (Golfo De Mexico, Canada sive Nova Fracia (sic), Nova Mexico, Canal de Bahamas, etc.).

This is the first example of the Zunners map we have offered for sale in more than 20 years.
