Description

Rare early world map and portrait of Sir Francis drake, with a Latin poem below.

Half length portrait of Sir Francis Drake, holding a globe and a shield featuring an image of his ship, the whole in oval frame with parapet. Published as an illustration to the Heroologia Anglica.

The map shows a reduced size copy of the Jodocus Hondius-Francis Drake World map ( Vera Totius Expeditionis Nauticae) at the bottom, which was first engraved by Hondius in Amsterdam, circa 1595. The two portraits (the other being a portrait of Sir Thomas Cavendish) are nearly identical to the two portraits by Jodocus Hondius that were pasted onto the verso of the Drake world map.

An exceptional rarity--Not in Shirley.
