Description

Beautiful hand-colored map of the former duchies of Bohemia, Silesia, Moravia and Lusatia (modern day Czech Republic), executed by Peter Schenk after an image by the famous French mapmaker Nicolas Sanson.

The map was probably included in Schenk's semi-standard composite atlas: Atlas contractus sive Mapparum Geographicarum Sansoniarum. That atlas was comprised primarily of plates that he and Gerard Valk had received from the Jan Jansson firm, but also included numerous maps after Sanson, unsurprisingly with the title. Most examples are dated to around 1700.

The map carries the additional title above the image: Estats de la Couronne de Boheme, ou sont le Royaume de Boheme, le Duche de Silesie, les Marquisats de Moraviae, et Lusace. Subdivises en leurs Principales Parties.

Attractive map with Putti and Diana upholding the cartouche.

Peter Schenk Biography

Peter Schenk the Elder (1660-1711) moved to Amsterdam in 1675 and began to learn the art of mezzotint. In 1694 he bought some of the copperplate stock of the mapmaker Johannes Janssonius, which allowed him to specialize in the engraving and printing of maps and prints. He split his time between his Amsterdam shop and Leipzig and also sold a considerable volume of materials to London.

Peter Schenk the Elder had three sons. Peter the Younger carried on his father’s business in Leipzig while the other two, Leonard and Jan, worked in Amsterdam. Leonard engraved several maps and also carried on his father’s relationship with engraving plates for the Amsterdam edition of the Histoire de l'Académie Royale des Sciences.
