Early Promotional Guide and Map For The San Juan Region

Rare newspaper style "Guide" to the San Juan region of Colorado, published in Topeka, Kansas, in 1877.

Mostly comprises Sidney Clarke's account of the richness of the newly discovered San Juan mines, in southwestern Colorado. Wonderful masthead depicting a train approaching the Rockies leaving behind the wreckage of a wagon and skeletons of horses; and corner vignettes of "picks" and "bricks."

The present edition is the second volume of the San Juan Guide, pre-dated by a volume issued in 1876, with different text and maps. There are two different versions of the 1877 map, the present example being different than the example held by the Telluride, Colorado, Historical Society and Museum.

The second edition is the first to include this larger map.
