Spectacular Illustrated London News View of New York City.

Large birds-eye view of the Manhattan from the South with elaborate borders and two further panoramas above and below.

Designed by Charles Parsons, engraved by Frank Leslie and printed from several woodblocks for the subscribers of the New York Illustrated News, November 26, 1853.

Charles Parsons (1821-1910) was a British painter who worked for a considerable time in New York, where he was a member of the National Academy of Design. Frank Leslie (1821-1880) was a wood engraver, known in America under this name, but was actually born Henry Carter in Ipswich, England.

[Assault on Fort Constitution, October 7, 1777]

This illustration showcases a pivotal moment in the American Revolutionary War, when British General Henry Clinton led an offensive against American defenses along the Hudson River. Clinton's forces successfully captured Fort Montgomery on October 4, followed by Fort Constitution near West Point. Despite these victories, Clinton had to withdraw from the forts to support British efforts in Pennsylvania due to simultaneous engagements in Saratoga and southern regions.
