Description

Fine steel engraving by A. H. Payne after artist C. Graham.

Fascinating early view of Hong Kong with a variety of ships in the harbor. In the foreground to the right are Chinese people on pleasure boats and junks. In the middle is a paddle steamer, a large trading junk and an East Indiaman. In the distance are the new buildings below the Peak on Hong Kong Island.

Published by Brain & Payne in 1847, only 5 years after Hong Kong was secured by the British after the Opium War of 1842 and the subsequent Treaty of Nanking.
