Description

Interesting Pre-Gadsden Purchase Spanish language map of the United States, published in Paris by Turgis.

The map shows an early configuration of New Mexico (pre-dating Arizona) and Oregon Territory (pre-dating Washington and Idaho).

The map includes an earliest appearance of the name Provo in Utah. Provo was originally called Fort Utah when it was settled in 1849 by 33 Mormon families from Salt Lake City, but was renamed Provo in 1850 for Étienne Provost, an early French-Canadian trapper who arrived in the region in 1825.

The map also includes an early appearance of Ogden, Utah, which was called Fort Buenaventura from its founding in 1847 and until it was renamed in February of 1851.
