The map extends from Singapore to Siam, with the Straits Settlements noted in Orange and the Federated Malay States in Yellow.
The Federated Malay States Surveyor published several different versions of this map between 1916 and 1924. Each edition appears to be quite rare on the market, this being the first example we have ever seen.

The Federated Malay States (FMS) was a federation of four protected states in the Malay Peninsula-Selangor, Perak, Negeri Sembilan and Pahang, which was established by the British government in 1895. The FMS lasted until 1946, when the FMS, together with two of the former Straits Settlements (Malacca and Penang) and the Unfederated Malay States, formed the Malayan Union.
The Straits Settlements were a group of British territories located in Southeast Asia. Originally established in 1826, as part of the territories controlled by the British East India Company. The Straits Settlements came under direct British control as a Crown colony in1867. The colony was dissolved in 1946. The Straits Settlements consisted of the four individual settlements of Malacca, Dinding, Penang (also known as Prince of Wales Island) and Singapore (with Christmas Island and the Cocos Islands).
The Malay States not included in the Federation (Unfederated Malay States) was a collective name given to Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis, and Terengganu. In contrast the FMS, the five Unfederated Malay States lacked common institutions, and did not form a single state in international law; they were in fact stand alone British protectorates.
