Description

Handwritten document, reciting a portion of Minute of Proceedings relating to the first Treaty to the Indians at Easton, originally dated July 19, 1756.

The document was a product of the Friendly Association for Regaining and Preserving Peace with the Indians by Pacific Measures, a part of the Society of Friends.

We the Subscribers from a Consideration of the necessity of regaining and preserving the Friendship of the Indians who were the Native Inhabitants of this Country, & being in hopes of the pacific Measures lately propos'd & now promoted may have that good Effect in Order to demonstrate our hearty Concern to maintain the Principles of Peace and good Will we have profess'd to them, & to contribute our assistance towards so Important a Service in a manner consistant with our peaceable principles do hereby promises & oblige ourselves our heirs, Executors, and Administrators to pay unto Anthony Morris Jonathan Miflin John Reyn??? Owne Jones Joshua Emlin Israel Pemberton Joseph Morris William Fisher, Jeremiah Elfrith, Charles Jones, James Pemberton Joseph Richardson Abel James Thomas Say, J??? Emlan, Jeremiah Warder & Samuel Sansom

or to their Order the Sums by us respectively subscrib'd -- within twelve months after date hereof together with lawfull Interest for the same to be employ'd for the Purposes aforesaid & we do agree & direct the said persons aforenamed within four months after date hereof to appoint a time and place for a general Meeting of all the Subscribers and notifiy the same by an Advertisement in the Gazette or Otherwise in Order that at such General Meeting a Treasurer & Trustees may be appointed for the Executing this Trust for regulating thier Trust, Authority & Duty & a proper Method be settled in which the Treasurer & Trustees may be oblig'd to render their Acco'ts annually, & be made answerable for such Sums of Money as may be by us contributed for the purposes aforesaid Witness our Hands

The present example includes a pencil annotation that it was once a part of the collection of James Moon of Bucks County, PA, who died in 1796.
