Description

Detailed map of Poland, first issued circa 1750 by the Homann Heirs, and now re-issued following the first dismemberment of 1772.

In earlier editions, the lower left corner includes a large cartouche, with coat of arms.

The present example is the rare 1793 state of the map, identifiable by the addtion of the color green and the added legend noting that the color green marks the country dismembered from Poland in 1793 at Grodno, by agreement between Russia and the Prussians.

This is the first time we've ever seen this edition of the map.

Homann Heirs Biography

Homann Heirs was a German publishing firm that enjoyed a major place in the European map market throughout the eighteenth century. Founded in 1702 by Johann Baptist Homann, the business passed to his son, Christoph, upon Johann’s death in 1724. Christoph died in 1730, aged only 27, and the firm was inherited by subsequent Homann heirs. This altered the name of the company, which was known as Homann Erben, or Homann heirs. The firm continued in business until 1848.
