Description

Striking panoramic view of Stockholm as viewed from the east, from Dahlberg's Suecia Antiqua et Hodiernia.

The view show the city at the height of its economic power centered on the Skeppsbron, a street and a quay in the old town. A busy shipyard is shown in the foreground and the harbor is filled with hundreds of ships. The Royal Palace and many cathedrals and churches are identified.

The Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna (Ancient and Modern Sweden) was Dahlberg's grand vision of Sweden during its period as a world power. In 1661 Dahlberg was granted a royal privilege enabling him to produce the work, which ultimately took decades to complete, and was published after his death. This plate was engraved by the Dutch engraver Willem Swidde.
