Description

Rare early large format map of Romania, published in Bucharest.

The present map is one of the earliest separately published maps of Romania. The map shows the regions of Romania, as it existed from 1878 to 1913. Romania first gained independence in 1878 and became a Kingdom in 1881. We note only a few examples of separately issued maps of Romania, this apparently being the earliest map of Romania as a "Kingdom," post 1881.

The covers include the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Romania, as it existed from 1881 to 1922.

We note that an earlier variant of the map may have been published in 1882, by the firm of Socecu, Sander & Teclu. (see Verhandlungen des Deutschen Geographentages, Volumes 9-10, p, 370).

The name Socecu & Teclu was utilized by a printing firm in Bucharest from 1881 to 1898. The name Socecu Sader e Teclu appeared from 1881-1886. The name Stabilimentul grafic Socecu & Teclu began to appear circa 1883.

This would appear to be the only map published by the firm.

We locate an example in the National Library of Greece and what appears to be the same map in the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, athough that example references the name Sander in the mapmaker title.
