Description

One of the few obtainable 17th Century English world maps. Blome's world map was prepared for a geography book published in 1669 or 1670. The world projection is based upon Sanson's world map, but is embellished with decorative features and a dedication to Charles II. The engraving work is probably attributable to Francis Lamb, although Shirley surmised that Wenceslaus Hollar or Thomas Burnford may also have been the engraver. California is shown as an island. A particularly unique early depiction of Australia. The map retains the cartographic detail and precision of Sanson's work. Minor reinforcement to the folds and minor restorations, archivally backed, as is usually the case with this map. A visually striking example. Shirley 455.
