Description

Fine sea chart of the northwestern coast of Java, with Batavia near the east end, showing the approaches to the region around Batavia (Jakarta), in present day Indonesia.

Scarce and beautifully engraved chart of the coast of Java with a small plan of Batavia. Soundings and shoals are carefully noted along the coastline where ships and fishing boats are depicted. The unique chart illustrates several types of trees (date palm, banana, coconut, sago palm) at the bottom, along with a decorative prospect view of the island. From Johann Wolfgang Heydt's Allerneuster Geographisch- und topographischer Schau-Platz von Africa und Ost-Indien.
