Description

Historically interesting sketch view of the coast of Saint Helena, attributed to Jean-Baptiste Henri Durand Brager; signed with initials on the lower right side.

Durand-Brager (1814 - 1879), was the official artist accompanying the official French expedition charged with repatriating the remains of Napoleon Bonaparte to France, after his death. Although signed with initials, we cannot certify that the maker is Durand-Brager.

The expedition to Saint Helena was one of the most active periods of Durand Brager´s life. When he went back to France, an official account of the expedition was published, entitled Sainte-Helene. Translation du Cercueil de L´Empereur Napoleon a bord de la Frégate La Belle-Poule. Histoire et vues pittoresque de tous les sites de L´Isle se rattachant au Mémorial de Sainte-Helene et a l´expédition de S.A.R. Mrg. Le Prince de Joinville, published in 1844 by Gide.
