Description

Rare separately issued map of New Mexico Territory and Arizona Territory, pubished by the United States Army's Topographical Engineers.

This rare map provides a finely detailed treatment of the region, blending both topographical detail and a highly detailed treatment of the early towns, roads, forts, Indian Reservations, wells and even ranches are shown.

Wheat notes that the Chief of Engineers map of California and Nevada, also issued in 1879, was one of the major achievements of the year in the mapping of the west. This map would seem to be equally, if not more impressive.

The detail in the map in southwestern Colorado and southern Utah is also excellent for the period.

While we note that OCLC locates a number of copies of the map, the example shown on the Library of Congress and Boston Public Library websites are later reproductions (apparently done in 1899, as per the BPL annotations on the map), leading us to believe that original examples of this map are very rare. We were unable to locate any auction or dealer records dating back more than 30 years.
