Rare map of Africa, from Ephraim Pagitt's Christianographie, or the Description . . . of the Christian World, not subject to the Pope, first published in London in 1635.
The map shows a classic depiction of Africa, with the Niger River extending east and west and the Nile having its twin sources in lakes deep into central Africa.
The primary theme of the map is locating the Christian peoples of the world who are not Catholic. The map includes the following annotations:
- Christianitie In a manner lost for want of teachers here have been some 100 of ??? now 2 only left
- Partriarch of Alexandria The Christians of Aegypt Called Cophti Under the Turke
- The Abissine Christians under Prester John
- Sojme Christians (near Angola)
Pagitt's book is illustrated with 5 maps, of which this map is included. While at first appearance, the map appears to be half of a world map, in fact Shirley notes that "the American half of [Pagitt's World] map was also printed separately for inclusion into Pagitt's work." We have owned one example of the work (sold in 2009), which included both maps, along with maps of Europe, Asia and Africa.
The map has been masked off at the right side, using only the right part of a larger plate (a practice that was not uncommon in the 17th Century).
The map is very rare on the market, this being the first we have offered for sale.
