Description

This interesting map was likely drafted by member of the Spanish army as reconnaissance guide leading into the southern part of the in the comandancia of Lepanto. The region, inhabited by the Igorot peoples, was rich in natural resources, yet proved very difficult for the Spaniards to subdue. The focus of the map is the road system leading from Benguet up to Cayan. Corresponding to its legend, it depicts ranches, forts, roads and mines. The region was described in detail by Captain Maximino Lillo de Gracia, in his work, Filipnas Distrito de Lepanto Description General (Manila, 1877).
