Description

Remarkably rare 6 sheet map of the United States, published by the General Land Office under the direction of S.S. Burdett.

The map highly detailed, showing the extent of the GLO's surveys, as well as locating Indian and Military Reservations, Railroads, towns, rivers, lakes, mountains and many other details.

S.S. Burdett was appointed by President Grant as Commissioner of the General Land Office in 1874, where he served until 1876. The cartographic output of the GLO during Burdett's short tenure appears to be limited to his "Geographical and Political Atlas of the States and Territories of the United States of America in Which the Public Land Surveys are now in Operation," published in 1876 (the source of this map), and this six-sheet map.

The following year, the title of the map becomes "Centennial Map . . . ", and is extensively revised.

The map has not appeared at auction and AMPR lists no dealer catalog entries. OCLC locates only 3 examples in American Institutions.
