Description

Rare finely engraved double hemisphere map of the World, published by Johannes De Ram in Amsterdam.

De Ram's world map is known to have appeared in a few examples of Van Keulen's Zee Atlas of 1683 and De Ram's extremely rare atlases, beginning in 1685. As noted by Shirley:

The map has quite exceptional surrounds to the two standard hemispheres with, at the top, a tempestuous vista of the gods and goddesses of Greek mythology in the heavens. An even more complex panorama unfolds below with groups of allegorical figures and animals representing the continents; between them Neptune commands his maritime domain.

. . . The title-page of De Ram's own atlas is . . . engraved in the distinctive style of, and signed by, Jacob Harrewyn. The world map is almost certainly by the same hand and stands as a splendid engraving which could hang beside any master print of the baroque period . . .

The map is of the utmost rarity, with only two appearances in dealer catalogues and one appearance at auction in the past 30 years.
