Description

Decorative map of the world, embellished with female representations of the continents etc. The map pre-dates Cook's discoveries in the Pacific and along the NW Coast of America. The incomplete Australia and New Zealand and NW Coast of America are of particular note, along with the near continuous land bridge from North America to Asia. The focus of the notes on the map are the Russian Discoveries in the North Pacific by Tchirikow and others. Embellished with female allegorical symbols of the four continents in the corners. Emanuel Bowen Biography

Emanuel Bowen (1694?-1767) was a British engraver and print seller. He was most well-known for his atlases and county maps. Although he died in poverty, he was widely acknowledged for his expertise and was appointed as mapmaker to both George II of England and Louis XV of France. His business was carried on by his son, Thomas Bowen. He also trained many apprentices, two of whom became prominent mapmakers, Thomas Kitchin and Thomas Jeffreys.
