Description

Extremely rare map of Texas, New Mexico and Indian Territory, from a German translation of Josiah Gregg's Commerce of the Pairies, engraved by F.A. Renner.

The map extends north to the Platte River and west to the Rio Grande River, centered on the early tribal reserves in Indian Territory and the various exploration routes to the west, including Pike's route, Josiah Gregg's Route and the wagon roads to San Miguel.

The map appeared in Karawanenzüge durch die westlichen Prairieen und Wanderungen in Nord-Mejico: Nach dem Tagebuche des Amerikaner J. Gregg bearbeitet, a German translation of Josiah Gregg's, Commerce of the Prairies, published by M.B. Lindau in Dresden and Leipzig in 1845, although there is a reference to the map only, in the BAYERISCHE STAATSBIBLIOTHEK, which attibutes the map to F.A. Renner and dates the map 1848.

This work is extremely rare, with no examples appearing at auction since a 1967 Park-Bernet sale.
