Description

The first map printed in America to focus on the area around Cape Cod and illustrating an early attempt to create a canal from Barnstable Bay to Buzzard Bay.

This rare map appeared in the Massachusetts Magazine, published by one of America's most important printers, Isaiah Thomas. The map was published to illustrate a proposal for a canal from Barnstable Bay to Buzzards Bay at Sandwich. The finely executed map extends from Nantcuket and Martha's Vineyard in the south to Salem, Marblehead, Cape Ann, Pidgeon Hill and Thatchers Land Light House in the North, centered on Plymouth Bay and Cape Cod. While no engraver is listed, the work is attributed to Samuel Hill, also of Boston.

Only one other example has appeared in a dealer catalogue in the past 25 years. Lan 23:51 (1996).
