Description

Interesting map showing the roads from Salisbury to Kingston, New Hampshire, drawn in Hampton Falls, New Hampshire in August 1769.

This is likely one of the earliest maps to name Salisbury, NH, which had been Stevenstown until 1768. The map notes a number of local land owners (John Wear, Joseph Wear, Esq. Perker, Esq. White, Theops. Page, Comt. Brown's House) along with places such as French's, Trickling Falls (the Trickling Falls Dam in East Kington still exists), and several notable places (Burying Yard, Meeting House).

The reference to "The Road Drawn by Co. Stevens &c." would seem to be a reference to Colonel Ebenzer Stevens, for whom Stevenstown (thereafter changed to Salisbury in 1768), New Hampshire was named.j

While still part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, Salisbury was originally granted as Baker's Town, named after Captain Thomas Baker, in 1736. After New Hampshire became a separate colony, the town was re-granted with the name Stevenstown. Additionally known as Gerrishtown and New Salisbury, the name Salisbury was taken when the town incorporated in 1768.
