Description

Fine wide margined example of this rare serio-comic map of Europe, based upon Goggin's caricature map of Europe.

This map of Europe was issued just prior to the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War. The map was apparently first issued in France, although we have never seen the French edition offered for sale. Editions of the map are also issuedi n German and Dutch text. Paul Hadol was one of the most outstanding caricaturists of the Napoleonic Third Empire. He established the figures of the day in a series entitled Me'nagerie Imperiale, in which Napoleon III appeared as a vulture and the Princess Mathilde as a sow. The \ text below the map provides a detailed description of each figure shown. The scale of the map is depicted as a bayonet-ready rifle.

A marvelous characture illustration of the nationalistic political attitudes of the various European powers, represented by caricatures. Th emap is very similar to P. Hudol's Carte drôlatique d'Europe pour 1870. .Serio-comic (political cartoon) maps were quite popular in the second half of the 10th Century and have become highly prized by collectors in recent times. This is also one of the earliest representations of this type of map.

There are at least 2 variant editions, one of which includes the price of the map ( Prijs 25 ct). OCLC locates 2 examples, a copy at Yale (on price given) and Bibliotheek Universiteit Van Amsterdam (with price) and 2 examples have appeared at auction and in dealer cataogues in the past 20 years. This is our 2nd example in 20 years.
