Description

Early map of the settled parts of North America, one of the earliest maps of North America to appear in a British Magazine and the first general map of North America to appear in the London Magazine.

The map was issued prior to Mitchell's map of North America and reflects a largely French controlled region, with the Appalachians suggesting a very narrow coastal region in the possession of the British Colonies, with no hint of the claims which Mitchell would show extending to the Mississippi and beyond. Much of the nomenclature in the interior is in French. A fascinating depiction of the region east of the Mississippi River, standing in stark contrast to the pro-British claims which would appear in Mitchell's map of the following decade.
