Description

Extraordinary map of Northeastern Oregon, extending from the Columbia River near John Days in the Northwest to Walla Walla in the Northeast, and Baker City in the Southeast and the John Day River in the West.

The map is a finely executed surveyor's map, tracing the routes of the Oregon Railway & Navigation Company in the region and the hydrographical features of Northeastern Oregon. The existing lines of the OR&NC are shown in red with hash marks reflecting existing rails. Proposed routes are shown with a simple red line. Note that the OR&NC had not yet reached either Walla Walla or Baker City, both of which are at or near the end of future lines. The line would reach Wallula, Washington in August 1883 and Meacham, Oregon in 1883, suggesting a probably date of this map sometime in early 1883.

The dashed brown line would seem to be the summit of the Blue Mountains. While the region has been mostly surveyed by the USGS, there are still areas where even the courses of the rivers are shown in a dashed blue line, reflecting an unsurveyed course of the river.

The Oregon Railway and Navigation Company was established in 1879. It operated between Portland and Eastern Washington until 1896. This is almost certainly one of the Company's orginal survey maps of its holdings and includes the note Drawer N, No. 527.
