Description

Rare early Southern California pocket map, by Jack J. Renie, one of the most prominent early 20th Century commercial map makers working in Los Angeles.

The map covers Southern California from the Mexican Border to Hanford, Owens Lake and both of the proposed sites for Hoover Dam, the orignal site in Boulder Canyon and the final site where the Damn was built (Black Canyon). The map is also of note to Southern California map collectors as an early appearance of the name Jack J. Renie, Chartographer. By the 1940s, Jack J. Renie was one of Los Angeles' most prominent map makers and he would ultimately publish an Atlas of Los Angeles City and County, which appeared as early as about 1942.

The publisher of the map, S & H.B. Gabriel of Culver City, also published a rare tourist guide, which included this same map. The map includes and index on the verso and was bound into printed paper covers (illustrated at the following link):
