Description

Highly detailed chart of the Texas Coast, from Matagorda Bay and Matagorda Island to New Orleans, with large insets of Galveston Harbor and a continuation map, extending to the Rio Grande.

This is likely the most detailed working sea chart of the Texas Coastline of the period. The scale is quite remarkable, as is the detail, which includes light houses, soundings, creeks, bays, harbors, shoals, sand bars and a host of other details. The chart includes 2 pastedown annotations, which describe changes in Lighthouse service in September 1859 along the coastline.

The chart is apparently quite rare. The Library of Congress references the publication of this chart as early as 1842, although this example is dated 1846, with corrections to 1857. OCLC lists only one copy (University of Texas-Arlington), which has an example of the map corrected to 1864.
